WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a cosmeceutical procedure (a procedure that achieves cosmetic results using medical-grade devices). As we grow older, the cycle of new skin growth slows and less collagen and elastin are produced. This results in fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots (pigmentation). Applying creams and serums on your face may succeed to moisturise the outer layer of dead skin, but no penetration takes place to the living part of the skin. The active molecules are simply too big to pass through the ultra protective epidermis layer. A microneedling treatment allow for deeper penetration of serums and ingredients results in higher efficacy, meaning you get more out of your serums than usual.

Microneedling is also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT). This is because tiny needles from a motorised microneedling pen are used to make microscopic punctures in the skin. These microscopic punctures created during the treatment (also known as microchannels) trigger a trauma/healing response in your skin. Your skin perceives that there has been a micro injury and as a result, floods the tissue with the signal to naturally produce more collagen and elastin to heal the ‘wound’. The natural healing process create the appearance of fresher, newer looking skin and skin imperfection soften and even disappear completely.

How does Dr. Pen Ultima A6 work?

The needles create tiny micro-cavities in the skin's surface. This stimulates the regenerative processes that naturally take place in the skin everyday. This, in turn, stimulates an increased production of collagen and elastin causing the skin to become firmer, for scars to gradually reduce and for wrinkles to smooth out. HOW TO USE DR PEN MICRONEEDLING PEN

SKIN PREPARATION

It’s advisable to stop using any skin care ingredient that may increase skin sensitivity such as Vitamin A/Retinol type creams and exfoliant products 3-5 days before use to prevent irritation. It’s also best if you avoid fish oil or any anti-inflammatory tablets 3-5 days before as well as this increases your risk of bleeding.

Make sure the skin is well cleansed and dried before starting the microneedling treatment. Fully tie back your hair, away from your face.

Apply numbing cream (optional). Normally a microneedling treatment do not produce pain but if your skin is very sensitive, you can purchase a numbing cream (available in pharmacy) and apply it before the treatment according to their direction. Make sure to remove the numbing cream before starting the microneedling treatment to avoid getting numbing cream into the microchannels. Once you’ve removed the cream, cleanse the skin again. You can use 0.12% or 0.2% Chlorhexidine product (available in pharmacy) with a cotton ball to wipe off the numbing cream.

USING DR PEN

On the well cleansed and dried skin apply a thin layer of serum such as Hyaluronic Acid or EGF. The serum will lubricate the skin, helping the needles of Dr Pen device to glide and preventing drag. Do not use products with Vitamin C (as it can cause a reaction), retinol, exfoliants and brightening ingredients.

Ensure that the device is charged (if using cordless) or you're near a power source if using while plugged in.

Ensure hands are clean and open a brand new cartridge packet and attach the cartridge into your device. Do not touch the tip or needles of the cartridge. You may also wear gloves.

Choose your desired type of needle cartridge and then select the appropriate depth by rotating the dial on your device. See the depth chart below:

Make sure to select the proper speed as well. Dr. Pen Ultima A6 has a speed range of 1 to 5. As a general rule, the faster you set the speed on your microneedling pen, the deeper the needle will penetrate into your skin. If you're using the pen on your face or other sensitive areas, we recommend using a lower speed - this gives you a more precise control of the pen and its movements.

It is recommend starting off on a lower speed if you're new to microneedling, as this will allow you to get a sense of how the pen moves and get used to using the device. As you gain more control and confidence, you may then adjust the speed of the device accordingly. If you're microneedling on the body, you may wish to adjust the speed of the pen to be higher (for instance, when microneedling on stretch marks, deep scars or deep wrinkles). Below the reccomended speeds according to the treated skin area:

• Face (General) -> Speed: 1-4
• Body (General) -> Speed: 4-5
• Forehead -> Speed: 1-3
• Between Eyebrows -> Speed: 1-3
• Nose -> Speed: 1-2
• Around Eyes -> Speed: 1-3
• Cheekbone -> Speed: 1-3
• Cheek -> Speed: 2-4
• Around Lips -> Speed: 1-2

Using a light pressure and without dragging work in small areas and keep applying the serum to each area before needling. The recommended pattern to move the pen for best results is vertical, horizontal, and then diagonal in both directions. Repeat this motion over each area two times. Use your free hand to hold the skin taught.

Microneedling on the body: When needling areas of the body (such as the legs or hands), avoid needling over the bony parts (especially on the legs). Ensure only to use 36 pin cartridges for microneedling the body and take precaution not to use any active ingredients (such as acids or retinoids) after microneedling. Regarding needle depth, it is recommend to use 0.5mm for legs and up to 1.5mm for fattier areas of the body.

POST-NEEDLING

If you desire, you may wash your face with tepid water - however this is optional. Immediately apply Hyaluronic Acid and a moisturizer creme to the treated area to calm the skin and provide hydration. You will experience mild redness and swelling after needling, as well as needle point bleeding. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about.

AFTER CARE

To ensure the proper healing environment, please follow the steps below.

The day after treatment (first 24 hours): Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and apply a nourishing moisturiser. Avoid products containing fragrances or active ingredients such as vitamin C, A/Retinols, acids such lactic acid, AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid). In general avoid anything perceived as ‘active’ skincare for at least 7 days post-treatment. Also do not use scrubs or toners which may cause irritation.

Your skin may experience mild swelling, bruising, peeling and flaking. You can minimise these effects by keeping the skin moisturised, which will reduce shedding and alleviate tightness.

Avoid exercising in gym because this environment is harmful, rife with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions to your skin. Do not sweat excessively, swim or apply makeup for 24 hours (if applying makeup is unavoidable, try to use one specifically for post-treatments or for sensitive skin to avoid irritation). Avoid prolonged sun exposure and if you leave the house you must apply a high protection sunscreen when going outdoors (better if mineral). 48 Hours After: Optional: Begin to gently exfoliate the dry/flaking skin to help speed up the recovery process, and continue to hydrate the skin, morning and night. Please note that this step is totally optional and if you choose to exfoliate to speed along the process, be sure not to exfoliate with chemical or physical exfoliants. Do not exfoliate if the skin feels sensitive - the flakiness and dryness of the skin will naturally subside.

3-5 Days Post-Treatment: Continue to apply a high protection sunscreen daily and avoid direct and extended sunlight for up to 1-week post-needling. Your skincare routine should focus on hydrating and moisturising products, continuing to avoid active ingredients, acids, scrubs and toners.

7+ Days Post-Treatment: You may return to your regular skincare routine.

Does it hurt?

There is an extremelly low level of pain associated with microneedling that normally most of the people can bear, however, using a numbing cream will be extremely helpful if you have a very sensitive skin. The amount of pain will also depend on the length of the needle you choose to use and the speed used in the Dr Pen device.

Downtime

There is no downtime as such, however, the first day or two after your treatment you will experience redness and your skin will flake. Avoid using Dr Pen if you plan to attend an event within 48 – 72 hours post-treatment.

How often can you have a microneedling treatment?

The frequency of the treatment depends on several factors such as your skin's level of sensitivity and how deep the needles are used. As a general rule, a microneedling treatment can be repeated every 4-6 weeks.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS OF MICRONEEDLING

Allow time for your skin to recover. After microneedling, skin redness is common - and this may last for several days. For this reason, you’ll want to ensure plenty of time between microneedling and any important events you may have scheduled.

Protect your skin from the sun. During this time, you should also take extra care to protect your skin from the sun, as microneedling can make your skin more photosensitive. Any sun exposure without adequate sunscreen can increase your risk of developing hyperpigmentation, so ensure to always wear a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 50+, and ideally a mineral-based sunscreen.

Hygiene is important. Microneedling can also have some other risks such as scarring or infection, if care is not taken to perform the treatment hygienically. It’s crucial to remember that microneedling is a cosmeceutical treatment, and you are essentially creating microscopic open wounds in the skin, so appropriate care must be taken to create a sterile environment and to keep your device sterile, too. Always wipe down any benches/surfaces where you will be microneedling with antiseptic spray, tie back your hair away from your face and cleanse your skin prior to microneedling. Also, thoroughly wash and glove your hands.

Only use cartridges once. Microneedling cartridges are single use only, and should be disposed of after each use. Always ensure that you’re opening a new cartridge packet every time you perform microneedling.

Absolutely avoid microneedling if you have one or more of the following conditions:

• Active acne
• Local infection such as herpes and warts
• Moderate to severe eczema
• Cuts, abrasions, bleeding injuries
• Keloid scarring
• Using anti-coagulant medications
• Skin conditions that has extreme keloidal tendency
• Cancer patients who have chemo/radiotherapy
• Microneedling should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding woman because although is generally considered to be safe the hormonal changes in the body during these times can cause skin to be extra sensitive and the healing process and production of new collagen requires vitamins and nutrients to be utilized that would otherwise be reserved for the child.
• Microneedling should also be avoided on those under 18 years of age.

If you are taking medications you can still do a microneedling treatment but with caution. You should definitively consult your doctor, dermatologist or skincare specialist if you are taking the following medications: accutane, antibiotics, antidepressants, medications that cause photosensitivity or high blood pressure.

Do not do microneedling treatment on recently tweezed or waxed areas. These areas are usually tender, and microneedling on sensitized skin can increase the chance of an unwanted reaction.

If you’re undergoing cosmetic treatments including chemical peels, laser, cosmetic surgery, filler injections, Botox or cosmetic surgery, it’s necessary to wait until your skin fully recovers before commencing microneedling. Make sure to always check with your medical esthetician if the microneedling treatment might interfere with any of your cosmetic procedure results.
